Toad Rocks

Climbing on the Southern Sandstone

Toad Rocks Climbing Area

Toad Rocks are set in a large sandy area next door to the Toad Rock Retreat Pub. It is popular with all ages and provides a collection of interesting rocks to explore. Toad Rocks has a reputation for being a fun and relaxed location, perfect for a day of enjoying the sunshine, boulder problems, short climbs, spending time with the family and having a refreshing drink in the pub!

Climbing

Toad Rocks offers a lot of boulder problems and very short climbs. Grading is fairly easy and not many guidebooks will list the routes due to the numerous problems on offer. Drying time is often long due to a number of cracks and passages. Therefore the site is most popular in the summer months.

History

Toad Rock was a popular tourist spot in Victorian times. It was first publicised in a guide in 1810 but the first record of the rocks name was in a guide by J. Clifford in 1823. Toad Rocks was named after the large rock, located centrally, which is said to look like a giant sitting toad. The main Toad Rock was eroded into its current shape by wind action during the Ice Age and the area has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The fencing around Toad Rock was first installed in 1881.

Access

Toad Rocks are also known as Denny Bottom Rocks and are located on Rusthall Common and close to Bulls Hollows rocks. They are located a mile west of Tunbridge Wells. Look out for Rusthall Road, take this and follow the signage to Toad Rock Retreat.

Parking

Plenty of on-road parking is available opposite the rocks.
