Happy Valley Rocks

Climbing on the Southern Sandstone

Happy Valley Rocks

Happy Valley Rocks are a quiet crag, and good for a spot of low to mid-grade bouldering on a sunny day. Despite rock which is somewhat poor in quality Happy Valley Rocks have an appeal and a surprisingly engaging atmosphere. Set in Happy Valley, originally called as a result of resembling an earthly paradise, the rocks are in lovely surroundings and are a popular spot for walkers. They are worthy of a trip for a relaxing day interspersed with some easier boulder problems.

Climbing

Happy Valley is south facing and has approximately 68 climbs. The climbs are small with the maximum height being 5m making it more popular with those interested in bouldering. Rock is variable in quality, being soft and sandy. Top routes include Red Snapper (Font 6a) which offers an overhang and Girdle Traverse (5c). Take a bouldering mat due to some steep landings.

History

Happy Valley was given its name in 1870 and was named after the paradise in Samuel Johnson’s ‘The History of Rasselas’. The Happy Valley area included what are now the grounds of the Beacon Hotel. Happy Valley was a beauty spot in the Victorian and Edwardian times. The best view of the area is said to be a clearing between the steps and the Beacon Hotel. The rocks were previously known as Cold Bath Rocks due to a Cold Bath being constructed below the rocks in 1708. The Hundred and One steps were built as access to the Cold Bath. The bath was not used from 1766 onwards and the area was not maintained until 1870.

Happy Valley Rocks have a wealth of history and were used in the past by Nomadic hunters. Mesolithic flint items have been found to indicate that the rocks were used as campsites.

In 1890 the Tunbridge Wells Commons Conservators became responsible for Happy Valley Rocks and continues to look after them now. The Happy Valley Caves located on the western end were once used as a dump for soot and as a result, are sometimes described as ‘Sweeps’ Caves. In 1839 a town guide described the caves as dormitories for Gipsies.

Access

Happy Valley is west of Tunbridge Wells. Look for signage directing you towards The Beacon hotel. The crag lies west of St Pauls Church on Rusthall Common. From the A264 Tunbridge Wells to East Grinstead Road follow the signage directing towards the footpath for Happy Valley.

Parking

There is parking available opposite the church – this is limited and normally there are no spaces available if a church service is on.

Notes

Bolts have been placed illegally without the agreement of the Tunbridge Wells Common Conservators (TWCC). In consultation with the BMC, the TWCC have accepted that the bolts should remain on the Cheesewring Rock. The bolts are thought to be safe but climbers should use the bolts at their own risk. It is suggested that the bolts are linked using a length of rope as a backup.

Excellent Outdoor First Aid course I recently did the 2 day Outdoor First Aid course with Hatt. It was the 4th such course I have done for my MTA qualifications but the first with Hatt and it was by far the best one I have done. An experienced, informed and passionate instructor providing ample opportunities for questions and clarifications as well as realistic scenario based learning in the woods at Blacklands Farm. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a 2 day outdoor first aid course!

Abseil off Peacehaven Cliffs Hatt Adventures were brilliant! We were running a charity abseil event and Tom and Andy were so calm on the day and knew exactly what they were doing to help get our supporters abseiling down the cliffs. Some of our supporters were very nervous and the Hatt guys made them feel at ease. The event ran smoothly and we are delighted to have raised over £6,500 for our charity! Emma was also extremely helpful on the lead up to the abseil and helped us advertise our event on social media. A very positive experience- would highly recommend. Our supporters were keen to do future events for us and had nothing but good feedback for Hatt Adventures too!

Abseiling with Sam I am doing a charity abseil this month so last month thought I'd practise and booked into an abseil at Blacklands with Sam. From beginning to end he was supportive, encouraging and patient with all of our nerves, the others on the course were all fantastic and friendly, Sam created a real sense of camaraderie and I had an unforgettable day. Now I feel less terrified and am looking forward to abseiling down some cliffs in a few weeks time! Thank you Sam!

Outdoor First Aid Level 3 - work courses have never been this fun! I attended the two-day Level 3 ITC Outdoor First Aid course at Blackland Farm delivered by Hatt as required my our new roles. It was EXCELLENT. A good mix of theory and practical learning, we were straight into it after a quick briefing. The cohort was just small (just 5 of us plus Dai, our teacher) which really helped the learning experience as it meant that we could work together closely and our instructor could spend a lot of time with each of us to support our understanding. The scenario learning with constructed participatory first aid situations was a brilliant way to put all of our learning into practice. Dai, our instructor was super enthusiastic and clearly very experienced, as well as an excellent listener and supportive in his feedback. The company I work for hadn't used Hatt before, but I will be recommending to my managers that staff are sent to them for future outdoor courses. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to receive my qualification certificate!
